Are you a teacher interested in developing classroom materials about justice, incarceration and its history? Apply for a chance to be part of an exclusive, four-day Summer Teacher Institute led by Eastern State’s education department and a team of Teacher Advisors.
This collaborative and creative four-day professional development opportunity includes field trips, guest speakers, research opportunities, plus space and time to develop classroom materials about justice, incarceration and its history. The materials developed at the Summer Teacher Institute will be shared with participants as well as the wider teacher community. This 2024 Summer Teacher Institute is open to all teachers.
Participating teachers will receive…
- A $600 stipend (paid in two parts)
- Act 48 credit (if teaching in Pennsylvania)
- A virtual or in-person field trip to Eastern State Penitentiary (tickets and $400 transportation reimbursement provided) for their class during the 2024-25 school year.
Participating teachers commit to…
- Attending the entire Summer Teacher Institute and all field trips. The Summer Teacher Institute will run from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm each day from Tuesday, August 6 to Friday, August 9, 2024.
- Implementing classroom materials they develop at the institute in the 2024-2025 school year.
- Presenting at one Teachback or other professional development workshop for classroom teachers during the 2024-2025 school year.
- Bring their students on a virtual or in-person field trip to Eastern State (tickets and transportation reimbursement provided) in the 2024-2025 school year, as they implement classroom materials, units or curriculum developed at the Summer Teacher Institute.
While this opportunity is rooted in social studies content we encourage teachers of all disciplines, locations, and grade levels to apply. The content at Eastern State is flexible and relevant to English, math, science and art classes.
